Townhall 2, located in Kent, Ohio, is a behavioral health organization that began as a crisis line for individuals in distress at KSU (Kent State University) by two hippie-era initiatives. A couple of years later, a drop-in center was created by a group of volunteers for individuals in crisis to visit and feel safe. After some time, the first and second group decided to merge and become “Townhall 2” in 1971. Since then, the behavioral health organization has added multiple services in addition to its pioneer programs. Some of these services include HIV testing and counseling, treatment services for crime victims, and medical diagnosis. The organization later joined the Portage County’s drug treatment center in 1997 with the aim of expanding its services. Now, the facility offers a gender-specific residential program and a co-ed outpatient treatment program. The facility is big on creating campaigns and advocating against the use of alcohol and drugs. The treatment technique used for clients in recovery includes evidence-based treatment modalities. The foundation technique used for all treatment at T2 is Motivational Interviewing (MI). Other modalities used include cognitive behavioral therapy and behavior modification techniques. Clients are not required to attend 12-step meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous, but it is encouraged. The first stage of treatment at the facility begins with an initial evaluation, from which the intake counselor will be able to determine the kind of care required and if need be, appropriate referrals to be made.
