Virgin Islands Ambien Addiction

Most people have gone through a few sleepless nights in their lives. For those who are diagnosed with insomnia or have trouble falling asleep, a variety of prescribed medications are available. Ambien is one of the most popular medications for sleeplessness. As a sedative-hypnotic medication, it is only meant for occasional use. However, Ambien can be quite addictive since it has a powerful effect on the user.

Ambien manufacturer, Sanofi-Aventis, maintains that Ambien is supposed to be swallowed whole. It acts fast and is therefore usually administered right before bed to prevent feeling sleepy in the daytime. Snorting Ambien increases the speed at which it acts and causes drowsiness, heart and respiratory problems, and affects motor functions.

Long-term: The side effects are quite severe once addiction sets in. These long-term effects continue in the waking hours. Some of the long-term effects of abusing Ambien are as follows:

  • Delusions
  • Confused reasoning and judgment
  • Loss of sexual drive
  • Feeling dependent
  • Increased chances of overdose

If you feel that you need Ambien every time to fall asleep, it is a sign of psychological dependence on the drug and is indicative of addiction. Ambien overdoses are a major cause of concern, according to the New York State Department of Health.

Getting Help: Help for Ambien addiction can be found in the following ways:

  • Inpatient rehab – Living at the facility for a few days until you recover
  • Outpatient program – Attending counseling sessions during the day
  • Holistic rehabilitation program – Programs that use a natural approach to recovery
  • Support groups – Regularly going for group meetings can help the cause
